The B.C. government has awarded a $470 million contract for Site C to a German-based company. Headquartered in Montreal, Voith Hydro will design, supply and install six turbines, six generators and the associated equipment for the 9-billion dollar dam on the Peace River in B-C. The units will convert the falling water into electricity, which is then transformed and fed into the electrical grid.
The contract is expected to create about 400 person-years of employment. That’s in addition to the 1,500Â created by the $1.5 billion construction deal announced late last year.
Just last week a woman was hospitalized after a 19-day hunger strikes outside of BC Hydro’s headquarters in Vancouver. There are currently four legal challenges against the project, and another reportedly in the works from Treaty 8 First Nations.
