Legion Field Sports Society hoping for expanded, renovated field in future

The Legion Field Sports Society is hoping to raise funds to see turf instead of grass, among other renovations for the sports facility in the coming years.

President Nolan Baerg says they are planning to raise funds as a non-profit from the community and organizations and needed a letter of approval from both Grande Prairie Public School Division and the City of Grande Prairie, the latter of which happened Tuesday.

“It’s better to try and raise money ourselves and then if we are short we can go to the city for help. It’s better not to make the city raise taxes since they already approved the dome recreation facility.”

Baerg says their main focus is to get turf, get another locker room, and switch to more cost-sufficient LED lights. The society also wants to expand the second floor of the tower in the hope of one day hosting provincial football games.

Baerg adds they also want the naming rights to be included in the letter so the field can always remain Legion Field.

“It’s a nice shoutout to the veterans and the Legion was the one who put the money in to build the truck when it was first built. It will be nice to keep that name and honour the veterans.”

The society needs about $1.5 million for the turf, between $1 to $1.5 million for locker rooms and the tower, and another $100,000 to switch to LED lights.
