The 5th annual Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People 5-kilometre run or walk will take place on May 5th. The Grande Prairie Friendship Centre, in partnership with Hug A Sister, is hosting the event to honour the missing and murdered Indigenous women.
Database Administrator at Grande Prairie Friendship Centre Sheila Moerkoert says the event is very close to their heart at the GPFC and would like for the Grande Prairie community to show up.
“We invite everyone to come out and show their support and honour the mothers, daughters, and sisters who have gone missing or have been murdered,” says Moerkoert. “Indigenous people are grieving over this reality today, and we are hopeful through great organizations to this one day stop.”
According to Moerkoert, Indigenous women murdered are ten times higher than any other ethnicity, and Murder is the third leading cause of death for Indigenous women. Local originations will be set up to provide more information and resources for the community. The event will start at 5 p.m. along the trails of Muskoseepi Park.
