International Paper celebrating pulp mill’s half century in Grande Prairie

The International Paper Grande Prairie Mill is celebrating 50 years of operation. On Monday, July 17th, the International paper company will commemorate the pulp mill’s milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Since construction started on the mill south of Grande Prairie in 1970, it has been owned by three different companies. Procter & Gamble built the facility and started operations with the first pulp bale on July 17th, 1973. In 1992 the facility was sold to the Weyerhaeuser Company, and then in 2016 to International Paper.

When the mill was approved in 1970 and construction began the facility was reported to have created hundreds of jobs and benefitted the local community. International Paper says a part of the mill’s success in the present day is “employing local Canadians and providing stable careers for generations.”

The 50th anniversary ceremony will be held at the mill from 2 to 3 p.m. It will include a ribbon cutting and cake.
