Dry, warm conditions have bumped the wildfire danger in the Grande Prairie Forest Area to very high. With the increase in wildfire risk, a fire advisory is in effect for the region.
Under a fire advisory, burning outside a campfire without a permit is not allowed. Fire permits are still valid for anyone with one, but they could be suspended or even cancelled if conditions continue, and new permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis.
Wood campfires, backyard fire pits, gas or propane stoves, and barbecues are allowed under the advisory. However, municipalities, parks, and protected areas could have additional fire safety requirements.
Alberta Wildfire is reminding residents to “never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished.”
In the Grande Prairie Forest Area, nine wildfires are burning, one classified as being held and the other eight are under control. Since the beginning of the year, 59 wildfires have been reported, burning around 141,434 hectares.
Anyone who spots a wildfire is being reminded to report it by calling 310-FIRE.
