Blue-green algae identified in Moonshine Lake

Users of Moonshine Lake Provincial Park should be on the lookout for blue-green algae. Alberta Health Services says cyanobacteria has been found in the water of Moonshine Lake in the Spirit River region.

People are told to avoid all contact with blooms, and to wash with tap water as soon as possible if contact occurs. Swimming in an area where the blooms can be seen should also be avoided for both humans and pets.

Coming into contact with the bacteria can cause people to become sick, with symptoms like a skin rash, fever, and vomiting. An advisory will remain in place until further notice.
