Alberta RCMP marks “OCCtober” to recognize reduced dispatch times

The Alberta RCMP is recognizing Operational Communications Centres for their reported response times being “faster than ever.”

According to the RCMP, the agency is responsible for policing 99 per cent of Alberta’s landscape, but despite the vast jurisdiction, even including remote and rural areas, the average response time of the Alberta RCMP is just over 21 minutes.

Currently, the RCMP reports that 97 per cent of all calls are answered in under two minutes, with 87 per cent of them being answered in under one minute.

In Grande Prairie, GP 9-1-1, the dispatching service for 47 per cent of Northwestern Alberta, has made significant strides when it comes to dispatch times, mostly thanks to a recent system update that allows dispatchers to respond and delegate resources to emergency situations more efficiently.

Across the province, the RCMP credits OCC employees with providing direction to officers during crisis situations, while ensuring officer safety by monitoring their movements while they are operating in the field.

As a token of their gratitude, the Alberta RCMP celebrates OCC employees annually in “OCCtober,” to recognize the importance of dispatch operators throughout the province.
