The latest batch of the County of Grande Prairie’s 100 Years of Farming Award recipients appeared in council on November 12th to accept the honour.
According to the county, since July, five local farm families have been recognized with the award which acknowledges their significant contributions to both the local agriculture industry and the county’s heritage.
During the ceremony, Councillors Chrenek, Harris, and Rosvold presented the awards to the two families.
The Lock family received the Heritage Award, in recognition of farm and ranch families who homesteaded and continued to farm or ranch the same land for 100 years or more. The Locks now join a prestigious club of two other families- the Carters and the Hurlocks, who are the only other families to have been recognized with the Heritage Award in 2024.
The Richards family received the Pioneer Award in recognition of families who have lived and farmed or ranched within the County of Grande Prairie for 100 years or more. The Bue family is the only other family to have received the award this year.
Applications for the 100 Years of Farming Awards are accepted by the county year-round. Those interested in applying or nominating a deserving family can do so on the county’s website.
