GPPSD staff member receives Indigenous Educator Award

The Grande Prairie Public School Division is celebrating Division Coordinator of Indigenous Programming Krista Umble as one of five recipients of Indspire’s prestigious Indigenous Educator Awards.

Umble was recognized for her “exceptional” contributions to Indigenous education at the 2024 National Gathering in Winnipeg.

GPPSD Superintendent Sandy McDonald describes Umble as having an innovative and compassionate approach to her work, and calls her an “exemplary leader” in the division.

Krista is an extraordinary leader who has brought a vision of connection, support, and empowerment to life within our division,” he says. “Her work not only enriches the educational experience of our Indigenous students but also strengthens the entire school community by fostering understanding, pride, and respect.”

According to the school division, Umble’s work is guided by three key pillars- Connect, which creates opportunities for schools to engage with Elders, Support, which provides resources for students and staff, and Empower, which officials say is key for Indigenous students and their families to have a voice within their school community.

Umble was recognized during the National Gathering in Winnipeg, held from November 20th to the 24th.
