County of Grande Prairie offering shelterbelt program for the second year after successful pilot project

The County of Grande Prairie’s 2025 Shelterbelt Program will go live on December 3rd.

The county maintains the Shelterbelt Program will continue on a cost-recovery basis, meaning residents can browse through the selection of species, place their orders online, and pick up seedlings in spring 2025.

In an effort to build on the success of last year’s pilot program, new and highly requested species such as Manitoba Maple, Okanese Poplar, Blue Spruce, and others will be available depending on availability at nurseries.

According to the county, the reason for a second round of the Shelterbelt Program is that shelterbelts are proven to help protect soil, improve air and water quality, and enhance wildlife habitat.

The program is available for County of Grande Prairie residents only, and the county cannot guarantee all orders will be fulfilled due to issues like disease or poor weather; however, residents will only be charged for the trees they receive.

A list of tips and tricks for caring for seedlings, along with ordering information, is available on the county’s website.
