Pipe freezing prevention measures as temperatures set to bounce around

Aquatera is warning residents to protect their water lines this winter as freezing temperatures can threaten the integrity of pipes, causing damage, blockages, and headaches.

Some of the most common causes of frozen pipes include faulty insulation, sudden drops in temperature, lack of water flow in exposed drains, or heating malfunctions in the home. Additionally, water and wastewater lines routed to unheated areas of your home are also at risk, even if your heating system is working.

As a result, the utility supplier suggests keeping an eye on your pipes throughout the cold season. Aquatera says dealing with early symptoms can often be addressed with a simple solution, and can help prevent any major problems in the future.

Some common signs to look out for include flooding or damp walls and ceilings, strange noises and odours such as gurgling coming from the pipes or foul smells coming from the drainage system, frost on exposed pipes, or a lack of water flow whenever you turn on a faucet.

Aquatera says a good first step in preventing burst pipes is learning where the shut-off valve is in your home. Officials also suggest keeping an eye on your water heater, properly insulating pipes, and sealing off any vents or areas that allow outdoor air to flow in.

In the event of a pipe freeze or burst, residents are always encouraged to call a professional.
