Accidental fatal drug poisoning claims one life in August

One person is reported to have lost their life to an accidental fatal drug poisoning in August.

According to the Alberta Substance Use Surveillance System, August was the fourth month is a row an accidental fatal drug poisoning was reported to have taken the life of one person in the community.

Between January and August of 2024, there were 15 accidental fatal drug-related poisonings reported and all were caused by non-pharmaceutical opioids.

Across Alberta, there were 94 deaths reported in August connected to opioid-related fatal drug poisonings and in the first eight months of the year, there have been 814 lives lost to accidental fatal drug poisoning.
