Residents advised to avoid highways around Grande Prairie due to slippery conditions

Grande Prairie residents are being advised of poor road conditions by several public agencies due to yesterday’s freezing rain.

The Fairview RCMP, County of Grande Prairie, and Environment Canada have all issued warnings to the public regarding icy and slippery roads, with the county going so far as saying residents should avoid the county’s roads altogether.

Despite their warning, the county maintains crews have been sanding since 3:00 p.m. on January 9th and will continue doing so on the 10th.

According to the Fairview RCMP, driving conditions are poor in the areas of Fairview, Spirit River, and Peace River.

Police say hills are especially risky when icy, and several vehicles have already ended up in the ditch, while semi trucks have gotten stuck and are unable to travel up hill.

The Fairview RCMP also recommends avoiding the highways if possible while crews work to get the roads in better shape.
