Grande Prairie drivers should expect some delays during Traffic Signal Maintenance program

The City of Grande Prairie’s Traffic Signal Maintenance Program will begin on January 14th in an effort to preserve the effectiveness of traffic signals throughout the city.

The project will involve inspecting and upgrading traffic signal infrastructure at select intersections. The first on the list include the intersections of 108th Avenue and 100th Street, 68th Avenue and 108th Street, and 98th Avenue and 100th Street.

In the spring, work will continue at two other intersections- 97th Avenue and 100th Street, and 116th Avenue and 102nd Street.

Capital Construction Supervisor for the City Mark Hoseasson calls the work “essential” in ensuring the safety and efficiency of traffic signals in GP.

This work is essential in maintaining traffic flow and ensuring the safety of drivers and pedestrians in Grande Prairie,” he says. “We thank residents for their patience and understanding as we complete these necessary upgrades.”

Throughout the duration of the project, the city suggests that there could be brief periods when signals are temporarily offline while crews transition from old to new infrastructure; however, these switchovers are planned during “off-peak” hours to minimize disruptions in traffic.

The city maintains traffic will remain open in all directions, but lane closures and reduced speeds should be expected in active construction zones.
