Winds challenging firefighting efforts south of Grovedale

There are now seven wildfires burning in the Grande Prairie Forest Protection Area. Six of those were discovered in the last 24 hours and at least three were human-caused.

The 102 hectare wildfire south of Grovedale is still being held. Firefighters, heavy equipment and helicopters are working to extinguish it, but they’re being hampered by high winds. The fire across Highway 40 has grown to 6.6 hectares but is also classified as being held.

Fire advisories remain in place for both the Forest Protection Area and the County of Grande Prairie. Since the beginning of wildfire season on March 1st, 21 wildfires have burned 126 hectares of land in the region.
