City looking to incorporate French into tourism

The city of Grande Prairie will be working to be more francophone friendly when it comes to tourism. Councillor Rory Tarant says the initiative started with the Mayor of Quebec City. He says that Grande Prairie was invited to be part of a network of cities who would consider making francophone culture a priority.

Tarant explains that there are some positives that the tourism focus will bring.

“Use that to an economic advantage with people brought here to the community. If there are services and things that can be done here in the french language, I think that can be a draw.”

They will look to bring bilingual signs and other features to facilities around the city.

Tarant says down the road, the new sign at the entrance to the city could also be done in both official languages. He adds that they will also look into creating french versions of tourism material.

A city representative will attend regional tourism meetings to make it known that french tourism is something they hold as a priority.
