Holy Family Catholic School Division is one of 14 in the province that will be part of school nutrition pilot program. The board was selected to receive a $250,000 grant from the government, as it was determined to have one of the greatest needs.
$150,000 will go to St. Stephen’s School in Valleyview, where it will be used to support their free lunch program and purchase appliances like a new stove, freezer and toaster. Principal Jodie Chisholm says they’re grateful for the support.
“Teachers simply cannot compete with hunger in a classroom, so we will ensure that these funds go directly toward keeping students healthy and better able to focus in class.”
The other $100,000 will be used for the grab’n’go breakfast program at Holy Family School in Grimshaw. Food like egg scramblers, waffles, oatmeal and breakfast sandwiches are provided to 140 K to 6 students daily.
The result of the pilot project across Alberta will be used to make decisions about school nutrition programs in 2017.
