New home construction down significantly in 2016

Housing starts in Grande Prairie ended up down 35 per cent by the end of 2016. According to the Canada Mortage and Housing Corporation, construction began on 234 new residential buildings over the past year. That’s down from 357 in 2015.

The number of single family homes being built was exactly the same, but multiple-unit structures were down by half.

The County of Grande Prairie also saw a major drop in new home construction. 2016 saw 25 per cent less new homes being built. However, the decline was largely due to single family houses, which dropped from 245 in 2015 to 126 last year. Multiple family starts nearly doubled from 49 to 94.
