School board trustee positions up for grabs

As candidates running to represent their community in the 2017 municipal election make it official next week, so will those looking to get on local school boards. Trustee elections will also be held on October 16th, with nomination day September 18th.

Candidates for the Grande Prairie Catholic and Grande Prairie Public school boards must submit their nomination forms to City Hall between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on that day. For the Peace Wapiti School Division board, papers need to be filed during the same time frame at either the central office in Grande Prairie or the sub office in Spirit River.

The current GPPSD board has five members, which is increasing to seven this election. That will be the same as GPCSD, which has seven trustees from three wards. PWSD has nine trustees, one from each electoral ward, which have been tweaked since annexation.

Like everyone running in the municipal election, candidates must have lived in their jurisdiction for at least six months and be at least 18 years old. Campaigning is not allowed on or outside of any school properties.
