RCMP warn of court summons e-mail scam

Grande Prairie residents are being warned about another type of online scam. RCMP say victims receive an e-mail that looks to be from the Department of Justice, claiming to be from their “online Crown Prosecution Service”.

The message indicates the recipient has been summoned to court as a witness, and tells them to click on a link to view details of the case. However, it is a spam email and the link installs a virus on to the computer.

Constable Gabrielle Spencer says anyone who is summoned to court will be served in person and not by e-mail, text message or the phone. Anyone who receives an email like this should avoid opening any links, and should report it to the RCMP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
