Despite having the highest percentage of millennials in Canada, Grande Prairie isn’t high on the list of hot spots for the generation. Canadian real estate website Point2 Homes has ranked Grande Prairie 55th out of the 85 biggest cities when it comes to where millennials are likely to settle.
The survey looks at factors like yearly income, average home selling price, unemployment rate, life satisfaction, low crime rate, healthcare, climate, level of education and percentage of millennials of the total population. With a total of 63,166 residents as of the 2016 census, just under 30 per cent are considered Generation Y.
Grande Prairie also ranked first when it comes to income, with millennials bringing in a median income of $115,000. The next highest city is St. John’s, Newfoundland at just over $99,000.
Where the Swan City drops in the report is when it comes to its education rank of 77th and crime rank of 72nd. Looking at Statistics Canada data from the past three months, Point2 Homes found 16.7 per cent of the population has a bachelor’s degree or higher, and the city’s Crime Severity Index was 150.41. That’s the third worst in the country.
Grande Prairie is also on the lower end of the climate ranking in 51st place. That data came from Numbeo, along with healthcare, while the average home prices came from the CREA and Real Estate Associations.
Quebec City was considered the most attractive city for millennials, while Langley, B.C. was the least desirable. Calgary was ranked 15th, while Edmonton was 18th.
