Outstanding social workers recognized for passion

Eight of the most outstanding social workers in the region have been recognized for their contributions. The 12th annual Passionate Heart Awards were handed out on Valentine’s Day during a luncheon put on by Family Community Support Services in the City and County of Grande Prairie, towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith and Wembley, and village of Hythe.

Acting County FCSS Director Lisa Watson says the awards are used as a way for the communities to recognize people who are dedicated to their wellbeing.

“Most people serving in the nominee categories do not expect recognition outside of the everyday benefits of
helping and they often choose these roles with the intention of giving behind the scenes. The Passionate Heart
Award is our way of saying thank you for all of your valued work and care.”

This year, the Chris Henderson Lifetime Service Award was handed out to Marlene Iverson of the PACE Centre, as she’s dedicated more than 10 years “of significant service.” The Caribou Child Advocacy Centre Team received the Passionate Heart Exceptional Team Award, while the Passionate Heart Business Award went to property restoration company WINMAR “for their outstanding support of the development of community.”

The 2018 Passionate Heart Exceptional Service Award was also given to people who have shown exceptional front-line service for two or more years. This year’s recipients were Michelle Wilson of Child and Family Services, Peace Wapiti School Division’s Karen Chrenek, Penny Allaster of The Oasis, Tanya Wald from the youth emergency shelter and RCMP Constable Ellen Archibald.
