Northwest Alberta has highest percentage of low-wage female workers in province

Northwest Alberta has the most low-wage female workers in the province.

Out of the 19,700 people making less than $15 an hour in the region, 13,100 of those are women.

That’s up 1.5 per cent from last year, while the overall stats for low-wage workers actually decreased in the area.

The same number of people earn below the low-wage marker, but there are nearly 6,000 more working this year, meaning the percentage improved to 18.3 per cent.

Almost half of those are between 20 and 45 years old in their prime earning years.
