Alberta First Nations file lawsuit against Site C dam approval

Concerns about downstream effects from the proposed Site C dam have led two Alberta First Nations to file a lawsuit challenging the federal government’s approval of the project.

The Athabasca Chipewyan and Mikisew Cree First Nations are challenging the dam on the Peace River, saying its effects on the Peace Athabasca Delta weren’t properly considered.

The Joint Review Panel found there would be no environmental effects on the delta, but MCFN and ACFN members say previous dams on the Peace have played a part in decreasing water levels.

The delta, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is in a fragile state.

B.C. First Nations have also taken the decision to court.
