Sexsmith asking for help in recruiting much needed doctors

A doctor shortage in the Town of Sexsmith has forced staff to look to the public for help in recruiting new physicians to the area.

The town’s administration staff is looking for a pair of volunteers to help form the “Sexsmith Physician Recruitment Taskforce.”

Mayor Kate Potter says the Sexsmith Medical Clinic has the capacity for five doctors, but they fall well short of that mark.

“Right now we are down to one and we have a sort of regular supply of locums and others who come for a short period of times to help manage the busyness.”

Successful applicants will help put together things like portfolios to delivery to recent grads or new doctors trying to woo them to move out to the Peace Country and continue practicing medicine.

Potter says she is hopeful the draw of Grande Prairie will also help make the search more successful.

“A lot of people don’t realize how close Sexsmith is to Grande Prairie and you can have that small town feel with the big city right next door. Make it feel maybe not so remote.”

If you feel you’re the right person for the job, you’re asked to send an email to [email protected], stating why you think you’d be a good fit for the committee.
