County gets $1.3 million for Wapiti River erosion control project

The County of Grande Prairie has received $1.3 million towards its Wapiti River Bank and Siltation Pond Slope Stabilization project.

The county says the project will provide long-term erosion protection for a pair of raw water reservoirs, which also serves as a regional water system for both the City and County of Grande Prairie as well as the Town of Sexsmith.

“We are pleased that the government has recognized the need to fund increased stabilization and bioengineering along the banks of the Wapiti River. Our efforts now will pay dividends in terms of mitigating flood activity in the area in future years,” says Grande Prairie-Wapiti MLA and Finance Minister Travis Toews.

The funding was part of a total of $43 million handed out by the province to help fund upwards of 15 projects across Alberta.

Earlier this year, Aquatera installed three levels of mitigation and erosion control, including installing sections of Willow and Balsam Poplar into the steep bank slope above the storage ponds to help remove excess moisture in the soil through the trees’ roots.
