Hep C screening program launches in Grande Prairie

A new and quick screening program for Hepatitis C is now available in Grande Prairie.

The test, called the ‘OraQuick HCV rapid antibody test’, can be done with a simple finger prick, and within 20 minutes, patients will be provided results, which are reportedly upwards of 99 per cent accurate.

“By offering hepatitis C screening in the community, we can increase awareness of the disease and the need for testing among at-risk age groups such as baby boomers,” says Dr. Yolande Westra, a physician with the Inflammatory Bowel Disease & Hepatitis Clinic at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital.

“Point-of-care testing at the pharmacy expands access to treatment, making it more convenient for patients, some of whom might not have a family doctor or may be unwilling to make the effort to book an appointment for screening.”

The screening program is part of a new partnership between local doctors and pharmacists, which aims to increase awareness about the need for testing, reduce the stigma of the disease and improve access to treatment.

Free screening will be available at the Grande Prairie London Drugs from November 25th-29th, after which screenings will cost $24.
