County holding pair of rural homelessness public consultation sessions

Residents across the County of Grande Prairie are being invited to share their thoughts on rural homelessness, housing insecurity, and solutions to support local residents.

The sessions, hosted by the Family and Community Support Services, will also help with a study to learn about the root causes of rural housing instability and homelessness and to develop locally-driven solutions.

Members of the public will also have the opportunity to join what the group of municipalities is calling the Getting to the “Root of Rural Homelessness Task Force”, which will be made up of residents and social service providers.

In 2020, as part of a province-wide Rural Homelessness Estimation, 42 of the 52 residents surveyed locally identified as homeless or housing insecure.

Drop-in sessions will take place Thursday, January 20th at the Beaverlodge Community Centre and Tuesday, January 25th at the Wellington Resource Centre in Clairmont. An online survey will also be available from January 26th to February 4th.

Municipalities taking part in the string of consultation sessions include The County of Grande Prairie, the towns of Beaverlodge, Wembley, and Sexsmith.
