Fish flies return to Crystal Lake Estates

Fish flies are back in Crystal Lake. Last year, millions of the insects, called chironomids, could be found on fences and homes north of Crystal Lake.

Pest Management Coordinator Jim Donnelly says they’re not normally noticeable, but numbers are up in recent years and they can be a major nuisance.

They’re a primary food source for many animals near the water, but don’t bite and only live for a few weeks.
