County crews support wildfire fights in the region

BC Forestry and Alberta Wildfire are the lead agencies responding to the Peavine Creek Wildfire which is located just east of the BC – Alberta border. A 20-meter-wide fire guard was established southwest of Preston Lake to help provide protection from the fire which is estimated to be 1,250 hectares in size. An evacuation alert remains in place for everyone located north of Township Road 732, west of Range Road 131, and south of Township Road 742. Residents are being advised to prepare to evacuate with one hour’s notice. County and Horse Lake First Nation firefighters are working on protecting structures in the area.

Fire officials are also monitoring the Boone Lake Wildfire Complex, which is made up of two wildfires located in Saddle Hills County. County resources are staged in La Glace, and ready to respond as needed. County officials have been in touch with livestock owners in the Homestead area discussing Emergency Response Plans in advance. The fires involved are estimated to be 4,800 hectares in size and located 20 kilometers north of Valhalla Center near the northeast side of Boones Lake and remains five kilometers from the county border.

Forecasted weather conditions are expected to be prime for extreme weather behaviour over the weekend. A fire ban has been in place for the County of Grande Prairie including the towns of Beaverlodge, Sexsmith and Wembley, as well as the city of Grande Prairie.
