Up to 30 centimetres of snowfall expected in the Grande Prairie area over the weekend: Environment Canada

A snowfall warning has been issued for several communities in the Grande Prairie area, with the expectation that 25 to 30 centimetres will fall throughout the weekend.

According to Environment Canada, the areas of Grande Prairie, Beaverlodge, Valleyview, the MD of Greenview near Fox Creek, Yellowhead County, and Woodlands County should expect a “long period of snowfall,” with between 20 and 30 centimetres in the forecast between Thursday evening and Monday morning.

Officials suggest snowfall amounts could be as high as 50 centimetres in some areas.

The first 10 to 20 centimetres of snowfall is expected by Friday evening and will become heavier throughout the weekend. Environment Canada says snow will become “very light” Friday night, but is expected to intensify again the following morning.

Drivers are advised that visibility could be suddenly reduced at times during the heavy snowfall, and surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots could become difficult to navigate as a result.
