County, City of Grande Prairie ink new cost sharing agreement to support recreation, culture

The City and County of Grande Prairie have agreed to share the cost of community services and amenities after Mayor Jackie Clayton and Reeve Bob Marshall inked the Recreation and Culture Cost Sharing Agreement on December 16th.

According to officials representing both parties, the agreement not only aligns with Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework legislation but represents the shared responsibility between the City and County to ensure residents maintain access to services across the region.

Reeve Marshall says working alongside the city displays the county’s shared dedication to building a region where recreation and culture opportunities thrive.

“This partnership ensures that residents from both municipalities can continue to benefit from accessible, high-quality facilities and programs that enhance our communities,” he says.

As a result of the agreement, beginning in 2025, the County of Grande Prairie will provide $2.76 million to the city, before the amount is adjusted on an annual basis to reflect the cost of services over the four-year agreement. Additionally, the county will contribute a retroactive payment of $4.6 million to the city, which will be distributed over four years to support prior building costs of facilities.

Funding from the new agreement will be used to support several facilities in the region including- Eastlink Centre, Bonnetts Energy Centre, Evergreen Park, and the County Sportsplex.
