Every year, during the holiday season, Albertans hit the provincial highways to visit family or get away for the Christmas season, and as a result, the Alberta RCMP has issued a few tips to make sure you, and your loved ones, stay safe over the holidays.
It’s no secret that Christmastime typically comes with a few celebratory drinks; however, the RCMP maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy when it comes to driving under the influence. Police suggest always having a designated driver prepared or arranging for a safe ride home after any celebrations.
Drivers should also consider keeping an emergency kit in their vehicle, as Christmastime driving comes with the cost of less-than-favourable road conditions. Police say emergency kits should include blankets, extra clothing, non-perishable food, water, and first aid supplies, to name a few.
With winter road conditions, the RCMP says driving accordingly in snow or ice can make the difference between an enjoyable holiday commute, and ending up in a traffic collision.
Distractions also pose a significant risk when driving year-round, and the RCMP says before starting any trip, drivers should remove any distractions from the vehicle, ensure children are properly secured, and set up any electronics or GPS before hitting the road.
Lastly, the RCMP says before embarking on any road trips, drivers should plan their route ahead of time, and let friends and family members know when they can expect you, and what route you’re taking.
The RCMP indicates they will be continuing with their December check stops all month long to help curb any impaired driving incidents through the holiday season.
