A data breach is affecting North American clients of PowerSchool, including all three school divisions in the Grande Prairie region.
PowerSchool identified a breach on December 28th of last year and acted “immediately” to secure the affected data and mitigate any risks. Officials say the Peace Wapiti Public School Division was notified of the incident on January 7th, and it was confirmed one day later that the division was a victim of the breach.
The compromised data includes student names, student mailing addresses, dates of birth, student home phone numbers, Social Insurance Numbers, guardian alerts, and basic student medical information.
The division maintains the incident is contained, and there is no evidence of malware or continued unauthorized use of PowerSchool at this time. Additionally, officials say no financial information related to people within the division was involved in the breach.
Officials say PowerSchool has informed the division of their intention to implement enhanced security measures and are working with law enforcement to address the situation.
