2Day FM annual sock drive approaches 1,000 pairs, Northreach officials call on community for support

2Day FM’s annual sock drive is underway until the end of January, and with its lofty 3,000-pair goal, the station, and the Northreach Society, are asking for your help to finish this year’s drive strong.

According to 2Day FM, 819 socks have been donated so far, with the most significant numbers coming from New Horizon Co-op with 540 pairs, and Grande Prairie resident Michael who dropped off 100 pairs on January 20th.

Northreach’s Harm Reduction Team Lead Lindsay Loset says her organization counts on the drive, especially in the winter, to ensure their clients stay warm throughout the cold season.

“It’s really important for us to be involved in this type of initiative because it is going to positively impact a lot of the clients that we help support,” she says. “We really appreciate any donations that come forward for the sock drive, we know that it can be tough out there in the winter, and nobody likes having wet or cold feet, so a pair of socks can really change somebody’s day.”

The numbers have continued to climb over the years, with last year’s count coming in at more than 2,700; however, Loset maintains that while donations may be on the rise, the need has as well.

“People staying at Wapiti House or stopping in at the Saint Lawrence Centre, those are clients that also oftentimes come and access our services so we want to help spread the word as much as we can to help our clients stay warm in the wintertime,” she says.

Donations are currently being accepted at the 2Day FM office, where they are processed and shipped directly to Wapiti House and the Saint Lawrence Centre.
