The City of Grande Prairie has issued an update regarding yesterday’s house fire at a residence along 102nd Avenue in the Avondale area.
According to the city, the Grande Prairie Fire Department responded to a blaze at approximately 9:30 a.m. on January 28th in an abandoned two-storey house. Crews immediately found flames coming from the main floor window and began exterior fire control as a result.
Officials say reports indicated there were potential trespassers in the house, which resulted in a search, ultimately confirming the building was vacant. The fire quickly spread to the attic and crews were removed from the inside of the home due to safety concerns.
Fire control continued from the exterior; however, crews found “multiple void spaces” within the house, which hampered efforts.
The decision was made to demolish the house entirely due to unsafe conditions, risks to the community and nearby properties, and potential environmental damage from continued water runoff.
The city says they are happy to report that no one was injured as a result of the incident.
