2015 Top Stories: Provincial, federal governments change

Each day for the rest of the year, 2day FM will be looking back on some of the biggest local stories of the year, as voted by our listeners. Here’s number 2:

2015 marked a year of major political change across both the province and the country. In May, Alberta elected a majority NDP goverment, as the PCs lost 60 seats to sit third behind the Wildrose Party’s 21.

In Grande Prairie – Wapiti, Progressive Conservative MLA Wayne Drysdale was voted in for a third term with more than 35 per cent of the vote. Howebver, his counterpart in Grande Prairie – Smoky, Everett McDonald, failed to do the same. He came in third behind the NDP candidate and the Wildrose’s Todd Loewen.

In the longest federal election campaign ever, Justin Trudeau and the Liberals won 184 seats in parliament, ousting Stephen Harper. The CPC kept 99 seats to form the opposition, and not surprisingly, one of those was in the new Grande Prairie – Mackenzie riding.

MP Chris Warkentin earned 73 per cent of the vote to represent northwestern Alberta. Warkentin now has a bigger role in the party, serving as the Agriculture and Agri-food critic.
