École St. Gerard tops Grande Prairie schools in Fraser Institute rankings

The Fraser Institute has released its controversial Elementary School Report Card, and the top ranked school in the Grande Prairie region last year was Bezanson. The school earned a 7.8 rating out of 10, earning it a ranking of 114 out of 812 Alberta schools. It was closely followed by La Glace at 121st.

The annual report bases its finding on the results of grade six Performance Achievement Tests. However, Grande Prairie Public School District Board Chair John Lehners says they don’t put much weight on them as they only look at academic factors.

“It’s just part of the mix. We have a whole bunch of data that we use for everything that we do.”

Here in Grande Prairie, there wasn’t much movement. Harry Balfour and Hillside moved up in the rankings, while Kateri moved down. The top ranked school this year was École St. Gerard in 370th place. The lowest was Avondale in 740th.

Harry Balfour is also number 17 on the list of the top 20 fastest improving schools from 2011 to 2015. It’s rating has improved from 3.1 to 5.1.
