Grande Prairie Brewers starting season with new home field

The Wheatbelt Baseball League season gets underway this week, and the Grande Prairie Brewers are hoping to go one step further this season.

The Brewers made last year’s championship final, only to fall to Peace River in five games.

Manager Dean Sauve says a large number of players from that squad are back again this year.

“It’s going to be pretty well 85-90 per cent of the same crew, and then we have a couple new kids that are going to be on the team this year: a couple coming from the midget team that are too old to play now, and then a couple other guys that heard about the team.”

The Brewers will also have a place to call home in Grande Prairie this season.

After playing home games in Rycroft last year, the Brewers will use one of the GPRC diamonds for games this summer.

Sauve thinks it’s another positive towards growing the program in our city.

“I think it’s a great thing for younger ball players to see that there’s a senior team and there’s something going on afterwards, so it gives them incentive to keep playing ball afterwards and I think that’s huge.”

The Wheatbelt Baseball League also includes teams in Peace River, Grimshaw, Rycroft, and Fort St John.
