UPDATE: Evacuation lifted after gas leak in Countryside South

UPDATE #3: The evacuation has been lifted and people in the neighbourhood can return home. The gas has been shut off in the area of the leak.

ATCO Gas has confirmed an excavator his the natural gas line. Crews are on site to repair.

UPDATE #2: Grande Prairie public School Division students from the area are also being held at school. Parents who want to pick up their children can do so. Some buses may also arrive later than usual.

UPDATE: Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools says students at Mother Teresa, St. Gerard, St. Catherine, St. Joseph, St. Kateri, and St. Patrick who live within the area are being held at school until further notice. Parents can pick up their children from school, but are advised to stay away from the Countryside South area.

A gas leak has been reported in Countryside South. Homes within a 100 metre radius of 89th Street and 64th Avenue are being evacuated as a precaution.

The area affected includes residents on the west side of 88A Street between 65th Avenue and 62nd, and 89th Street and 64th Avenue. Traffic is also affected from 88A Street south of 64th Avenue.

Emergency services and ATCO Gas are on the scene, where it’s reported a contractor hit a line. People are being asked to stay away from the area.
