Starting in 2017, it will be free to get a membership at the Grande Prairie Public Library. Board Chair Maura Good says Alberta is one of the only provinces in Canada that charges for a library card, and they’ve been working for some time in GP to get rid of that fee.
Currently, an adult pays $7.50 yearly, while a senior pays $5. Children’s cards are a dollar, while GPRC students fork out a toonie. Close to 250,000 people visit the library each year, borrowing 460,000 items.
In the current economy, every dollar counts, and Library Director Maureen Curry argues libraries are essential to local families. In addition to books, you can find digital magazines, DVDs, eBooks, music and other programs.
