Grande Prairie getting nearly $3.7 million from federal Gas Tax Fund

The City of Grande Prairie will see nearly $3.7 million from the federal Gas Tax Fund this year. The fund is considered a permanent source of funding for municipal infrastructure and is allocated on a per capita basis.

This year’s capital budget allocates a million dollars each to road rehab and overlay and sidewalk and pathway rehab. $600,000 will go toward new sidewalks and paths and $300,000 towards the $2.9 million storm water master plan. Another $200,000 will go to the $3.1 million project to extend 112 Street over the railway tracks.

The County of Grande Prairie is in line for almost $1.1 million.

Other towns in the Peace getting funding include Peace River ($362,781), Fairview ($170,473), High Prairie ($140,174), Sexsmith ($130,362), Beaverlodge ($127,504), Valleyview ($106,316), Manning ($62,755), Falher ($57,956), and Spirit River ($55,261).

The Villages of Hythe and Rycroft are each getting $50,000, along with the MD of Spirit River. The MD of Fairview will see $90,196 while the MD of Greenview will receive $285,685.

“Through the federal Gas Tax Fund, communities across Alberta and the rest of Canada can direct federal funding to the infrastructure projects that address the most pressing needs of local residents and businesses, from improving drinking water to building new recreational facilities,” says Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Amarjeet Sohi.
