The United Conservative Party leadership race is coming to a close. Ballots can be cast only by UCP members who signed up by the deadline two weeks ago. The voting will run until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Grande Prairie Smoky MLA Todd Loewen expects it to be a close race between Bryan Jean and Jason Kenney. Loewen doesn’t think Doug Schweitzer has the support to split the vote.
“I don’t believe that’s an issue with this vote. I think Schweitzer appears to be far enough behind that there’s probably no opportunity for anything like that to happen.”
Loewen has released some videos on social media in support of Brian Jean. He said he felt compelled to dispel lies and half-truths that he was hearing.
“Brian started right from the start saying he wanted to keep a positive campaign. He didn’t want to get in to mudslinging or anything like that. Of course, some of the others did get in to that sort of thing. I just thought it was important to clear the air on some of the things that aren’t true.”
Topics in the videos include Bill-6, carbon tax, work ethic and the way he deals with Ottawa.
Loewen also says he supports uniting the province not dividing it adding he’s looking forward to working under the UCP banner and getting back to the legislature Monday.
