People living and working south and southeast of Grande Prairie can expect to see and smell smoke south of the city over the next month. The County Regional Fire Service is doing FireSmart work in Crown land in the area from Tuesday, October 31st until late November.
Fire marshal Ken Atamanchuk says they will be burning 24 hectares of dead and dying pine stands and debris to help prevent the spread of wildfires.
“The work being completed is part of the County’s Wildfire Mitigation Strategy, a plan which aims to safely and effectively reduce and minimize the impacts caused by wildfires. This work will also reduce the fuel load
in pine stands that were previously infested by the Mountain Pine Beetle.”
Burning will be happening northeast of Evergreen Park and south of the residential subdivisions of Pine
Valley, Maple Grove and Taylor Estates, south of the residential subdivisions of Taylor Estates, Maple Ridge and
Willowood Estates, and south of Wedgewood in a section of the County Industrial Park off Highway 668 and Resources Road/Range Road 60A.
