Construction of new homes in Grande Prairie is still the slowest of any major city in the province this year. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says work has begun on 24 new homes this year, the lowest number of any city with more than 10,000 people. It’s only just behind similarly sized Medicine Hat at 24.
April was the busiest month of the year for the city so far. There were 10 housing starts, including seven single family homes and three with multiple units. That’s down from a total of 15 in 2017, which was the second slowest year for new home construction in a decade.
Year-to-date, multiple family homes are on the same pace as last year, but single units are down from 33 to 18 in the first four months of the year. That’s a 38 per cent drop.
