Fire sparks in Copperwood basement

A fire broke out in the basement of a home in Copperwood early Monday morning. The Grande Prairie Fire Department says a smoke alarm woke up the family of the home on 122 Avenue just after 1:30 a.m. and they discovered the fire.

The residents called 9-1-1 and made it safely outside. When firefighters arrived, they say they were able to quickly control the spread of the flames, and had the fire fully extinguished by 2:30 a.m.

Platoon chief Ben Sergeant says an investigation of the cause and a full damage estimate will be done later Monday.
