After numerous construction delays, Whispering Ridge Community School is now open. The building was originally set to open in time for the 2017 school year but a number of factors like weather and lack of skilled workers pushed that date back.
Whispering Ridge currently has around 500 students and 50 staff members. Principal Shawn O’Shea says he’s glad to finally be in the building.
“It’s been a tremendous privilege and honour. The students, the community, myself and the staff are all very thrilled.”
The new building features numerous common areas for students to work in and has the second largest gym in the school district. O’Shea says the 6,500 metre facility was mostly designed by parents and community members.
“Early in the process we took a group of parents down to other schools and looked at different designs early in the process. Students and parents and community members then had an opportunity to design everything from the playground to the design of the building.”
The school was built to take some of the pressure off of Harry Balfour School which is overcrowded. The school district is still looking for a replacement for Harry Balfour School.
