Grande Cache to become hamlet January 1st

Grande Cache has gotten its New Year’s wish. The province has approved the town’s dissolution set for January 1, 2019.

An order was made by the provincial government and the Lieutenant Governor in Council on November 27th. As of the beginning of next year, the town will become a hamlet of the Municipal District of Greenview and its 9th ward.

The move was overwhelmingly approved by residents in a late September vote. It followed the confirmation that the town needs $80 million worth of repairs, upgrades, and new construction and already can’t cover its operational and capital costs.

An interim council made up of the current Greenview Council and town councillors Duane Didow and Tyler Olsen will govern the hamlet until the next municipal election in 2021. All town employees will become MD of Greenview employees.
