UPDATE: Extra supportive living will help keep seniors in Spirit River: GSF

UPDATE: Grande Spirit Foundation Chairperson Judy Kokotilo-Bekkerus says she is extremely grateful and excited about the announcement.

“Aging in Place through the highest levels of care has been a long term goal of the foundation for the entire region. We are truly appreciative of the work the government has completed through the departments of Alberta Seniors and Housing and Alberta Health Services to support this project.”

The Town of Spirit River will soon gain more supportive living and long term care spaces. The provincial government has approved up to $24 million to add 52 supportive living and 40 new lodge spaces.

Dunvegan – Central Peace – Notley MLA Marg McCuaig-Boyd says these additions will allow seniors to retire in their own community.

“Premier Notley and our government know the importance of supportive living and lodge spaces to the seniors and local community. The seniors built this community and deserve to retire and age in their community.”

A needs assessment done by Saddle Hills County, the Village of Rycroft, the Town of Spirit River, Birch Hills County and the Municipal District of Spirit River found that more lodge spaces and supportive living spaces were needed. Currently, the 40-unit, 60-year-old Pleasantview Lodge run by the Grande Spirit Foundation is the main facility in the region.

The money for the project will come from Alberta Health and Alberta Seniors and Housing.
